Matere is an independent paper goods studio creating considered, tactile notebooks designed to elevate the simple act of putting pen to paper.

We create notebooks and paper goods for brands, hotels, events and considered gifting. Our approach is rooted in beautiful, responsibly sourced materials, thoughtful production and an appreciation for the sensory qualities of a well-made object.

Our selected group of trusted UK makers are chosen for their specialist expertise and exceptional standards of craftsmanship. From refined lay-flat binding to distinctive print techniques such as blind debossing, each detail is carefully brought to life with precision, resulting in refined objects of enduring appeal.

O U R    F O U N D E R

Matere was founded in London by Jessica Howard, a creative director and brand designer whose career spans hospitality, lifestyle and editorial.

Having created work for brands including Aesop, Selfridges, How To Spend It, Condé Nast and Shangri-La, Jessica brings a considered and highly refined approach to Matere and its collaborations. Her work is grounded in restraint, detail and an understated sensibility. 

Each piece reflects the same attention to detail and considered simplicity that has shaped her wider design practice. Materiality, function and form are carefully balanced to create objects that feel as good as they look.

Alongside Matere, Jessica continues to work independently as a creative director, developing identities and experiences for select clients across hospitality and lifestyle brands.
